The EU has put in place a robust set of policies and rules which seek to ensure a very high level of protection and strong rights for consumers.<\/p><p>EU consumer laws provide consumers with the following key rights:<\/p><ul><li>The right to truthful advertising<\/li><li>The right to have faulty goods repaired or replaced<\/li><li>The right to contracts without unfair clauses<\/li><li>The right to return most goods purchased online within 14 days<\/li><li>The right to access goods and services on the same terms as local customers<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Consumer rights<\/span><\/p><p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/data.europa.eu\/eli\/dir\/2011\/83\/oj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Consumer Rights Directive<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0gives consumers the same strong rights across the EU.\u00a0It aligns and harmonises national consumer rules, for example on the information consumers need to be given before they purchase goods, services or digital content, and on their right to cancel online purchases, wherever they shop in the EU.<\/p><p>A distance contract is where the consumer buys a product or service online, over the phone, or by mail order. Consumers have additional rights including:<\/p><ul><li>Being provided with extensive information in advance of purchase<\/li><li>Having a 14-day cooling-off period during which a consumer can change their mind and cancel the purchase<\/li><li>Entitlement to a refund within 14 days of cancellation<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Other key consumer rights directives include:<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?uri=uriserv:OJ.L_.2019.136.01.0028.01.ENG&amp;toc=OJ:L:2019:136:TOC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Directive (EU) 2019\/771<\/a> &#8211; concerning contracts for the sale of goods.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/en\/ALL\/?uri=CELEX:32019L0770\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Directive (EU) 2019\/770<\/a> &#8211; concerning contracts for the supply of digital content and digital services.<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>National authorities in individual countries are responsible for the enforcement of EU consumer protection laws in order to protect consumers when shopping across national borders. <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/eli\/reg\/2017\/2394\/oj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Consumer Protection Cooperation Regulation (EU) 2017\/2394<\/a> provides for a network of competent public enforcers (CPC network) to tackle these issues in a coordinated manner. Such national authorities have strong powers to detect irregularities and take speedy action against rogue traders. If national consumer authorities work together at EU level, they save taxpayers\u2019 money. The cooperation is applicable to consumer rules covering various areas such as unfair commercial practices, e-commerce, geo-blocking, package holidays, online selling, and passenger rights. Consumers are able to seek direct support from either public bodies or non- governmental organisations also known as NGOs within individual member states. The <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/live-work-travel-eu\/consumer-rights-and-complaints\/resolve-your-consumer-complaint\/european-consumer-centres-network-ecc-net_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Consumer Centres Network<\/a> (ECC-Net) is a network of ECCs found in all EU Member States, Iceland and Norway which was set up over 15 years ago to educate EU consumers about their rights in the single market, and to help them resolve cross-border disputes. The Network seeks reciprocal arrangements with third countries to assist EU consumers when travelling in third countries.
