A manufacturer can only place a product on the EU market when it meets all the legal requirements. The conformity of a product with the legal requirements must be assessed by the manufacturer before it is put on the market. While the responsibility is with the manufacturer, some legislation requires the involvement of a conformity assessment body in the process.
The manufacturer must draw up a declaration of conformity containing certain required information as evidence of that the conformity assessment process has taken place.
