Safe non-food consumer Products in the EU and China

Safety of childcare articles and children’s clothing

Learning outcomes

This module is aimed specifically at products manufactured in this sector and covers issues which are unique to this area. The most frequently listed serious risks of these products, according to the Safety Gate/RAPEX statistics are choking, strangulation, laceration and poisoning. These are serious issues since they concern the most vulnerable consumer groups, i.e. infants and children.

The objective of this module is to give hands-on information to manufacturers of childcare articles and children’s clothing products on how to prevent bringing dangerous products to the market.

At the end of this module, you will be able to understand the:

  • application of the General Product Safety Directive (GPSD) and harmonised standards that apply to it
  • main safety hazards for childcare articles and children’s clothing
  • steps that can be taken to design safety into childcare products and children’s clothing
